A beautiful autumn afternoon greeted the dozen starters here at Central Park
Avenue Gosnells, unfortunately the predicted wind from the SE did not materialise.
Zephyrs from the NW to the NE prevailed for most of the time which created
somewhat of a dilemma for the PRO in deciding where to place the marks.
Taking a bit of a punt that BoM forecast may be correct for a change, a decision was
made to set a course for the predicted SE’ly 5 – 9 kts. Wrong decision as it turned
out.
However, the PRO had a cunning plan to add to the consternation of the members
by setting a “Modified Arena Course” which entailed having both a windward and a
leeward gate = Arena Course, the modification being each gate buoy had to be
passed once. Might sound confusing but as an example if you sailed around the
windward mark # 2 and leeward mark #4 then on the next lap you had to sail around
windward mark #1 and leeward mark # 3 and finish. Simple.
The penalty for not sailing the right course was a fine of chocolates for next race day.
I was disappointed that no one sailed to the wrong marks, so no chocolates next
Tuesday.
The main reason for the Arena course was to split the fleet and avoid a pile up at a
windward mark, this worked well, although today’s fleet was less than expected. The
first race had half the fleet rounding each mark i.e. 6 not 12 trying to round a mark.
Well done everyone for taking onboard this new if not repeatable format, not many
grumbles were heard, the PRO didn’t have his hearing aids in anyway.
Looking at the results congratulations to Australian National Champion Nick Jerwood
with 6 wins and 2 seconds for nett 8 pts. To Janet Jerwood a very fine 2 nd place with
nett 17 pts and to round off the podium in 3 rd place now past- Commodore Kim
Swarbrick with 27pts.
